Gulf of Guinea
HIGH THREAT Primary threat: kidnapping. High-risk areas: Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, São Tomé.
The Gulf of Guinea remains one of the world’s most significant maritime security hotspots, accounting for a substantial share of global armed robbery and kidnapping incidents at sea. It stretches from Senegal to Angola and takes in major energy export routes, offshore assets and shipping lanes.
Regional cooperation has reduced large-scale piracy in recent years, but armed robbery, boarding, crew kidnapping and opportunistic attacks persist, particularly in coastal waters, anchorages and port approaches.
Recommended posture: BMP Maritime Security, with physical barriers on the most vulnerable access points. Nearest Palaemon hub: Las Palmas.
