This week saw eighteen maritime security incidents globally, including: Americas , Atlantic, Black Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Guinea, Gulf of Oman, Southeast Asia, and the Strait of Hormuz.

Executive Summary
Americas
Port Fire in Ecuador: Multiple vessels caught fire while located in the port of Manta, Ecuador.
Europe
Drone & Missile Strikes: UAV and naval drone strikes hit ports in St. Petersburg, Berdiansk, and Constanța. Airborne strikes damaged three military vessels and struck two grain ships, killing five crew members.
Sanctions & Mines: France seized a Russian shadow-fleet tanker in the Atlantic, and Romania detonated a drifting naval mine.
Gulf of Aden
Boarding Threats: Two merchant vessels successfully repelled near-simultaneous, coordinated approaches by suspicious small craft using onboard armed security.
Northwest Indian Ocean
U.S.–Iran Confrontations: Iran launched a ballistic missile at a U.S. facility in Bahrain. U.S. forces responded by seizing a sanctioned tanker and disabling another.
Commercial Shipping Struck: A cargo ship sustained an explosion and fire after being hit by two projectiles near Iraq.
Southeast Asia
Sea Robberies: Armed thieves boarded an anchored container ship in Manila—tying up a watchman at gunpoint—and made two boarding attempts on bulk carriers in the Singapore Strait.

Northwest Indian Ocean
6 June 2026Â
Iranian forces conducted a ballistic missile attack targeting the United States Naval Support Activities in Bahrain. CENTCOM confirmed that six of the missiles were successfully intercepted by air defense systems. The seventh missile suffered an in-flight failure and crashed before reaching its target. No injuries were reported.
5 June 2026
U.S. forces boarded a sanctioned stateless tanker approximately 20NM southwest of Sri Lanka. The tanker claimed false registry and had previously sailed under a false flag. Reports indicate the tanker was carrying around 1.9 million barrels of Iranian crude oil and had been in the area for 6 weeks.
2 June 2026Â
U.S. Forces disabled an Botswana-flagged oil tanker that was approaching towards Kharg Island, Iran. CENTCOM enforced blockade measures against the unladen tanker after the crew ignored repeated warnings and refused to comply with U.S. forces over a 24 hour period. A U.S. aircraft ultimately disabled the vessel by firing a hellfire missile into the engine room. The tanker was successfully prevented from reaching Iran.
1 June 2026Â
A cargo ship was attacked 40NM Southeast of Umn Qasr, Iraq. The vessel reported a large explosion following a hit from an unknown projectile on the starboard side. The UKMTO reported that a second impact occurred, resulting in a fire which has since been extinguished. No injuries to crew has been reported.
Gulf of Aden
6 June 2026Â
A merchant vessel reported being suspiciously approached on two separate occasions by suspicious boats. The first incident occurred near 12°58.73’N 048°11.76’E, and featured a small craft carrying 7 people. The second incident occurred 12°53.10’N 048°20.50’E,15 minutes after the first one, and involved a white dhow carrying eight to ten people. In both incidents, the approaching craft disengaged after defensive measures were taken including the deployment of armed security personnel. No injuries or damage were reported.
Europe
6 June 2026Â
Russia conducted UAV strikes targeting two Ukrainian Search and Rescue Service (SAR) vessels whilst they were actively performing a humanitarian mission inside Ukraine’s TTW. The vessels, with clear identification as nonmilitary rescue crafts, suffered physical damage to both hulls and superstructures. Several injuries were sustained amongst crew members. The Ukrainian Navy deployed rapid-response vessels to evacuate the wounded personnel whilst under fire.
5 June 2026Â
Open sources reported that a naval drone exploded in the civilian section of the Port of Constanța, Romania. The drone, which was clearly linked to the war in Ukraine, was discovered earlier in the port area and had been isolated by security forces before it self-detonated. The explosion caused material damage to port infrastructure, but no casualties were reported.
5 June 2026Â
Open sources show that two cargo vessels have been struck near the port of Taganrog, Russia. The vessels were in transit from Türkiye to Rostov-on-Don to load grain when the incident occured. Both vessels were struck multiple times. One, sailing under the flag of Belize, experienced a fire and loss of propulsion. The second vessel, registered under the flag of Palau, suffered a fire which killed three crew members. The remaining crew abandoned ship and was evacuated.
4 June 2026Â
Ukrainian sources conducted a UAV strike on the Russian patrol vessel SVETLYAK, as it was patrolling off the Crimea Peninsula. The strike damaged the vessel, however there is no further information regarding casualties or the extent of the damage.
3 June 2026Â
Ukrainian forced launched a UAV strike on St. Petersburg Oil Terminal, involving at least three UAVs striking targets in the tank farm at the oil terminal. Reports indicate flames & smoke was detected in the area. Targets in Kronstadt and Krasnoselsky districts were also hit. Several injuries have been reported, but no fatalities. The Russian Project 20380 corvette BOIKIY was also hit whilst in dry dock, resulting in flames onboard the vessel.
2 June 2026Â
OSINT reports indicate that a YaRM-type anti-landing mine was spotted ashore of the Romanian coast between Varna and 2 Mai. The mine has been detonated safely by the Romanian navy on the 3 of June.
1 June 2026Â
Open-sources indicate that a Russian-flagged cargo vessel was struck by a UAV whilst berthed at Berth 3, Berdiansk Port, Avoz Sea. The UAV was launched by the 422 Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment Luftwaffe. According to Ukrainian sources, the vessel was unloading ammunition at the time of the strike.
1 June 2026Â
French naval forces intercepted and boarded a Russian oil tanker whilst transiting international waters, 400NM West of Brittany, France. The tanker is suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet, and had been flying a false flag when detained. UK forces supported the mission, with a helicopter from HMS Somerset providing tracking and monitoring assistance.

A Panama-flagged cargo vessel was struck by a UAV whilst underway in the Black Sea. The strike resulted in hull damage to the vessel. The crew has been reported as safe.

5 June 2026Â
A Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier reported an attempted robbery whilst transiting the Phillip Channel. The crew sighted three perpetrators on the upper deck. The vessel’s master stated that all crew is safe and is unable to determine if items were stolen. The vessel will continue her voyage to NPOC, Singapore.
5 June 2026Â
A Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier reported an attempted robbery whilst underway in the Philip Channel. The crew sighted six perpetrators armed with knives and a gun-like object in the engine room. The vessel’s master reported that everyone is safe and was unable to determine if items were stolen. The vessel was able to continue her voyage to NPOC, Singapore.
3 June 2026Â
An armed robbery occurred onboard the Maltese-flagged containership, CMA CGM Valparaiso, whilst at anchor in Manila Anchorage, Philippines. Four robbers, armed with three guns and a knife, held the duty watchman at gunpoint and forced him to open the bosun’s store. The perpetrators tied the watchman’s hands with rope before escaping with stolen ship's stores. The watchman freed himself and alerted the Officer of the Watch who raised the general alarm.

6 June 2026
A large fire erupted in the artisanal fishing sector of the Port of Manta, Ecuador. The fire began on one boat and spread with extreme speed as many small-to-medium artisanal vessels are constructed of highly flammable materials. Authorities confirmed that 35 vessels were completely destroyed (14 artisanal fishing boats, and 21 motorized skiffs). As the fire reached onboard fuel tanks, a chain of loud explosions echoed across the harbor, injuring four workers. Investigations concluded the disaster was caused by a welding accident rather than organized crime related sabotage.

Operational Guidance
Operators should:
Watch for Drones & Mines: Maintain sharp lookouts for UAVs, waterborne drone boats, and floating naval mines in the Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Strait of Hormuz.
Anti-Piracy Watches: Enhance security against armed boardings in the Singapore Strait and Manila Anchorage.
Obey Chokepoint Restrictions: Avoid the Strait of Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme and coordinate all transits directly with U.S. naval forces (NCAGS).
Deploy Active Deterrence: Use armed guards, fire hoses, and evasive maneuvers to repel small-craft and pirate approaches in the Gulf of Aden.
Monitor Security Broadcasts: Maintain a continuous watch on VHF Channel 16 and closely track UKMTO, JMIC, and local NAVWARN alerts.
