Major Incidents Include:

CARIBBEAN SEA

Low-Level Property Theft: Maritime security risks remain minimal and strictly limited to opportunistic crime in this region, as is highlighted by a single reported incident of petty theft aboard a merchant vessel with zero impact on crew or vessel safety.

EUROPE:

Large-Scale Port & Shadow Fleet Strikes: Ukraine launched an aggressive, multi-day drone campaign damaging over 90 Russian "shadow fleet" tankers across the Sea of Azov, while Russian forces retaliated with heavy ballistic missile barrages targeting Ukrainian port infrastructure in Odesa and Chornomorsk, destroying foreign bulk carriers.

GULF OF GUINEA

Stowaway Activity in Delta: Regional security threats continue to be driven by illegal migration rather than active piracy, underscored by a merchant vessel discovering a hidden stowaway while transiting the Western Niger Delta.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ

State Conflict & Choke Point Closure: Following extensive U.S. airstrikes on coastlines and subsequent Iranian missile retaliation against regional U.S. bases, Iran officially broadcast a total navigational closure of the strait amidst severe drone and projectile strikes that disabled multiple merchant tankers and cargo vessels.

Russian strikes HIT three Ukrainian ports: a ballistic missile DAMAGED the superstructure of a St. Kitts & Nevis-flagged bulk carrier at Odesa (fire extinguished, no injuries); an EIGHT-MISSILE BARRAGE struck Chornomorsk, triggering air-raid alerts across Odesa Oblast; and a UAV ATTACK on Izmail (Danube) ignited a terminal fire and KILLED ONE PORT WORKER.

MISSILE STRIKE/ 10th JULY

A Russian BALLISTIC MISSILE STRIKE on Odesa port infrastructure ignited FIRES and KILLED ONE PORT WORKER. No merchant vessels reported damage.

UAV STRIKE/ 10th JULY

Ukrainian UAVs STRUCK Russia-flagged oil-products tankers and an unsanctioned Turkey-flagged chemical/oil tanker, causing superstructure damage in the Sea of Azov. Meanwhile, a UAV ATTACK on the port of Taganrog caused extensive FIRE and confirmed DAMAGE to petroleum storage tanks at the Fuel Oil Terminal. One EU-sanctioned vessel was claimed to be DESTROYED after a third consecutive day of targeting, following Ukraine's declaration of shadow-fleet vessels as LEGITIMATE TARGETS.

UAV STRIKE/ 9th JULY

A Russian UAV STRIKE on the port of Pivdennyi, Odesa Oblast, set FIRE to a storage tank at the Liquid Chemical Terminal (confirmed by satellite/FIRMS data). No merchant vessel damage.

UAV STRIKE/ 9th JULY

Ukrainian UAVs STRUCK one or two tankers in Taganrog Bay, causing FIRES; crews were EVACUATED with no casualties, and one fire was extinguished. Merchant vessels in the area were noted withholding AIS.

DRONE STRIKE/ 8th JULY

A Ukrainian USV STRUCK a tanker, 10NM south of Yalta (damage/casualties unknown), and a Ukrainian UAV STRUCK a Russia-flagged chemical tanker off Taganrog, setting it alight; all 13 crew were evacuated by Russian Border Service vessels, with TWO INJURIES reported.

DRONE CAMPAIGN/ 7th JULY

Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces launched a COORDINATED CAMPAIGN against Russian shadow-fleet and logistics vessels across the Sea of Azov and Crimea, with commander 'Magyar' Brovdi confirming UP TO 35 VESSELS STRUCK IN 96 HOURS. Among them, a Marshall Islands-flagged crude tanker at the Novorossiysk CPC terminal was HIT, yet it suffered NO HULL DAMAGE and drifted into the Turkish EEZ.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ

ATTACK/ 11th JULY

The Golden Arsenal was boarded during a suspected piracy attack on the 1st of July 2026

The Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy was ATTACKED approximately 9NM east of Oman (2240 UTC), sustaining stern and engine-room DAMAGE and a FIRE. The crew abandoned ship into a lifeboat and were rescued by local authorities; CENTCOM reported one civilian crew member missing and confirmed the vessel could not continue its voyage. Occurring after the US strikes on Iran, this fourth vessel struck in a week indicates the threat to commercial shipping has not been suppressed.

WAR RISK/ 11th JULY

Strait Closure Broadcast A merchant vessel reported Iranian authorities broadcasting over VHF that the Strait of Hormuz was CLOSED FOR NAVIGATION, warning vessels not to attempt transit (approx. 26°15'N 056°41'E, 1937 UTC). Ambrey advises vessels on the US corridor to liaise with US forces and to MAINTAIN A CONTINUOUS WATCH ON VHF CH.16 in the Arabian Gulf and approaching the Strait.

MILITARY STRIKES/ 8-9th JULY

US–Iran Military Exchange US Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted extensive strikes against Iran over 8–9 July, STRIKING 90 MILITARY TARGETS — air defences, coastal radar, missile/drone storage, naval capabilities and IRGC small boats — to degrade Iran's ability to attack shipping. In response, the IRGC STRUCK four US bases in Kuwait (Arifjan, Ali al-Salem) and Bahrain (Juffair, Sheikh Isa), warning of BROADER AND MORE CRUSHING RESPONSES. Iran reported US strikes on its southern coastal provinces, alleging civilian casualties.

TANKER ATTACKS/ 7th JULY

Two tankers were STRUCK while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. One was HIT BY AN UNKNOWN PROJECTILE, sustaining structural damage; a second was STRUCK by an unknown UAV, sustaining minor structural damage. No casualties or pollution reported; both continued to their next ports of call.

TANKER ATTACK/ 6th JULY

A southbound tanker was STRUCK by an unknown projectile on the port side, 8NM east of Limah, Oman (2119 UTC), CAUSING A FIRE. The Master confirmed no casualties and no environmental impact. This is the first of the three vessel attacks (6–7 Jul) later cited by CENTCOM as the trigger for its strikes on Iran.

Operational Guidance

Operators should:

  • Watch for Air & Sea Projectiles: Maintain sharp lookouts for long-range UAVs, cruise missiles, and USVs across the Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Persian Gulf.

  • Comply with Chokepoint Closures: Avoid entering the Strait of Hormuz due to unilateral state closures and active military engagement, unless explicitly authorized.

  • Mitigate Global Port & Anchorage Risks: Enforce anti-boarding watches at Caribbean and Gulf of Guinea anchorages, and check for stowaways during Niger Delta transits.

  • Deploy Maximum Active Deterrence: Ensure onboard security details are at peak readiness to repel state-level aggression and kinetic strikes in high-risk zones.

  • Monitor Urgent Military Broadcasts: Maintain constant watch on VHF Channel 16 for sudden navigation bans, and track emergency UKMTO, and MSCIO alerts

Threat Outlook

Region

Threat Level

Assessment

Caribbean Sea

Low

Low-level piracy threats are a possibility in these waters.

Europe

Very High

Risks in the Black Sea have peaked again, as both Russia and Ukraine launch large scale, region-wide, strikes. Ukraine has declared shadow-fleet vessels as legitimate targets, but has simultaneously continued a pattern of also tergetting non-sanctioned vessels in the area. All commercial shipping thus remains a target for subsea, surface and aerial drones, including in coastal areas.

Gulf of Guinea

Low

Low-level piracy threats are a constant element in this area.

Strait of Hormuz

High

The Hormuz conflict has entered new escalations as US and Iranian forces reengage, with commercial shipping as primary targets. Iran is attempting to enforce its blockade, whilst international forces are claiming the Stait is open.
