Escalating Targeting of Commercial Shipping & Energy Infrastructure: Widespread UAV, USV, and projectile strikes against commercial bulk carriers, tankers, and offshore energy assets around Novorossiysk, Odessa, and Romania maintain extreme operational risk.
MEDITERRANEAN:
Targeted Onshore Precision Strikes: Precision aerial attacks near port infrastructure present minimal local maritime hazards, but heighten the risk of regional retaliatory attacks across wider maritime corridors.
EAST AFRICA:

EUROPE (BLACK SEA)
UAV STRIKE / 23rd AUGUST
Russian UAV strike on a port in Odesa Oblast, Ukraine. Fuel storage tanks and cargo-handling infrastructure reportedly hit. No merchant vessel damage, casualties or pollution reported.
UAV STRIKE/ 22nd AUGUST
A bulk carrier alongside at a Ukrainian port was struck during a Russian UAV attack. Adjacent warehouses and fuel tanks were also hit. No casualties or pollution reported.
UAV DISCOVERY / 22nd AUGUST
A fixed-wing reconnaissance drone was discovered by fishermen on the Turkish coast near Istanbul and destroyed by a maritime explosive ordnance disposal team. The drone is believed to have originated from Ukraine.
UAV STRIKE/ 22nd AUGUST
Ukrainian UAV strike on a port in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. Imagery showed smoke rising from the impact site. No merchant vessels reported damaged; extent of damage to port facilities undisclosed.
COMBINED STRIKE/ 22nd AUGUST
Coordinated Russian strike on four Odesa Oblast ports within approximately 90 minutes, using UAVs, a ballistic missile and cruise missiles. A follow-up missile attack struck one of the same ports later that day. No merchant vessel damage or casualties reported.
UAV STRIKE/ 21st AUGUST
A general cargo vessel en route from Turkey to Georgia was struck on the bridge by at least one UAV in the Turkish EEZ. The vessel issued a Mayday, but no casualties were reported. Attribution is unconfirmed, as the ship's route falls outside the typical profile of recent regional strikes.

Russian UAV attack on a Ukrainian Danube port. Port infrastructure was reportedly targeted. No merchant vessels reported damaged.
DRONE STRIKES/ 20-22nd AUGUST
A second wave of Ukrainian UAV strikes hit five Russia-bound merchant ships—a container, tanker, ro-ro, and two cargo vessels— near Novorossiysk, Tuapse, and Sochi. The attacks caused fires, heavy damage, and left several drifting. One died and one was injured during a rescue. Targeting extends beyond grain carriers.
USV DISCOVERY/ 20th AUGUST
Two Romanian Air Force F-16s engaged an explosive-laden maritime drone drifting in Romania's EEZ near an offshore gas platform, after its presence was reported by a commercial vessel. A Coast Guard vessel with an explosive ordnance disposal team was deployed to the area.

A merchant vessel was struck during a Russian UAV attack on a Ukrainian port, reported as one of two dry cargo ships hit. A gas tank within the port was also impacted. No casualties or pollution reported.

A cargo vessel was struck by a Russian UAV off Odessa, Ukraine. Footage from the following day showed the vessel berthed with smoke emerging from the starboard side. Crew status and extent of damage remain unconfirmed.

A second dry cargo vessel was struck southeast of Odessa, Ukraine. Russia claimed the vessel was carrying weapons and military materiel for Ukrainian forces. Extent of damage undisclosed; no casualties reported.

Russian UAV attack on a Ukrainian port, damaging port infrastructure and a civilian vessel. Footage showed a large column of fire and heavy smoke at the point of impact. Extent of damage undisclosed; no casualties reported.
MISSILE STRIKE/ 17th AUGUST
A merchant vessel was struck during a Russian strike on a Ukrainian port. Four individuals were critically injured and fires broke out within the port premises. Russia claimed a naval patrol vessel and fuel tanks were also hit.
UAV DISCOVERY/ 17th AUGUST
A UAV was discovered drifting at sea close to an offshore gas project in Romanian territorial waters — the second such discovery in the area within a week. Type and disposal actions unconfirmed.
DRONE STRIKES/ 17-19th AUGUST
Ukrainian UAV and USV strikes targeted Russian Black Sea shipping at Novorossiysk and Tuapse, hitting eight vessels— mostly grain carriers, plus a tanker and cargo ships. One bulk carrier was heavily burned and abandoned by its 21 crew, whose rescue ship was struck hours later. Multiple injuries were reported across the wave.
UAV ATTACK/ 16-17th AUGUST
Russian UAV attack on a Ukrainian Danube port, causing a fire at the port premises. Russia claimed a berthing terminal used to unload military-related cargo, hangars and warehouses storing unmanned surface vessels were hit. No merchant vessel damage, casualties or pollution reported.
EUROPE (MEDITERRANEAN SEA)
AIRSTRIKE / 18th AUGUST
An Israeli military helicopter conducted a missile strike at Gaza Port, targeting militant commanders and operatives. Local media reported the strike hit a cafe near the port, resulting in six fatalities and ten injuries.
EAST AFRICA
HIJACKING/ 20th AUGUST
An oil products tanker transiting westbound in the IRTC was boarded by armed perpetrators after issuing a VHF distress call reporting an approach by an unauthorised vessel. The pirates took control and navigated towards Somalia. Naval forces are surveilling; the vessel remains hijacked.
UAV ATTACK/ 18th AUGUST
Houthi forces launched a multi-drone attack against a port and an oil refinery in southwestern Saudi Arabia, stated as retaliation for alleged airspace violations. The attackers claimed the refinery was struck; no confirmation or damage assessment was issued by Saudi authorities.
HIJACKING/ 17th AUGUST
A general cargo vessel was boarded and hijacked by eight armed persons inside Somali territorial waters. The vessel altered course sharply and ceased transmitting AIS shortly before the boarding. Crew reported safe.
AERIAL ATTACK/ 17th AUGUST
A cargo vessel was struck by multiple projectiles southeast of Al Mukha, Yemen, in an attack attributed to Houthi forces. The vessel was unmanned at the time; the damage sustained resulted in a constructive total loss.
STRAIT OF HORMUZ
AIRSTRIKE / 18th AUGUST
A bulk carrier was struck by an unknown projectile during an outbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz. The engine room was damaged and one crew casualty resulted. The remaining crew were assisted by the Omani Coast Guard. No environmental impact reported.
INTERCEPTION / 17th AUGUST
An unladen chemical/oil tanker was intercepted and boarded by Iranian naval forces near Qeshm Island while inbound to the UAE. Iranian outlets cited non-compliance with newly announced transit authorization and fee requirements. The action was assessed as regulatory enforcement rather than a cargo seizure.
WEST PACIFIC
SINKING/ 18th AUGUST
A cargo vessel in ballast was abandoned in the western Pacific following a shaft-seal failure that caused uncontrolled flooding of the engine and machinery spaces. All 18 crew were accounted for without injury, assisted by a diverting LPG tanker. The vessel remained adrift pending salvage and towage arrangements.
Operational Guidance
Operators should:
Watch for Air, Sea & Piracy Threats: Maintain lookouts for UAVs, USVs, projectiles, and pirate skiffs across the Black Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Strait of Hormuz.
Heighten Anti-Boarding Protocols: Enforce strict BMP-MS measures and security readiness to counter active Somali piracy and hijacking threats in the Gulf of Aden.
Prepare for State Interdictions: Exercise extreme caution in the Strait of Hormuz to avoid IRGC detentions and direct kinetic strikes.
Protect Offshore & Energy Assets: Maintain high vigilance near offshore platforms, grain terminals, and anchorages vulnerable to drone strikes.
Monitor Emergency Broadcasts: Track VHF Channel 16, UKMTO, MSCIO, and Operation ATALANTA alerts for immediate navigational hazards and distress calls.
